PLUS and Four Wheel Drive Association of BC Align to Defend Public Access to Crown Land
VANCOUVER, BC — The Public Land Use Society (PLUS) and the Four Wheel Drive Association of British Columbia (4WDABC) announced a partnership to defend public access to British Columbia’s Crown land and promote greater transparency in land-use decisions. The announcement comes amid growing debate over land-use planning, access restrictions, and government decision-making affecting public lands across the province.
Both organizations say the public must remain informed and engaged as government decisions increasingly shape how Crown land is used, managed, and accessed.
Access to Crown land supports many aspects of life in British Columbia. It underpins backcountry recreation, tourism, conservation, resource development, and the certainty that property owners and rural communities rely on. PLUS and 4WDABC say these interests require open decision-making and meaningful public engagement.
“For those of us who spend our weekends in the backcountry, Crown land is the legal backbone of our freedom to explore British Columbia,” said Kim Reeves, President of the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC. “Without it, the access we enjoy today would not exist. We are standing with PLUS because we want to ensure the gates stay open and the decisions affecting Crown land remain transparent for everyone who values this province’s public lands.”
PLUS says growing pressure on Crown land makes transparency and public accountability more important than ever.
“Four-wheel drive access is what makes Crown land usable,” said Warren Mirko, Executive Director of PLUS. “Whether for recreation, stewardship, tourism, or resource development, most activity in BC’s backcountry depends on reaching it first. That’s why this partnership with the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC is so important. Together we are working to protect public access to public land, and that decisions about it remain transparent.”
The two groups will collaborate on public education, outreach to elected officials, and advocacy initiatives to ensure Crown land remains open, accessible, and responsibly managed for all British Columbians.
